Castelnuovo di Garfagnana
An easy 15-minute walk from the apartments, Castelnuovo is the principal town of the Garfagnana region and has around 8,000 inhabitants. The medieval town sits on the Serchio River 40 kms north of Lucca. It has a good choice of restaurants, bars and shops, a weekly market on Thursdays, a train station with services to Lucca, Pisa and Florence, buses to the coast and surrounding villages, an open-air swimming pool, a hospital, a theatre and a cinema.
For more information, see the town website.
A short train ride away, or 30 minutes by car, Lucca is an attractive town surrounded by Renaissance walls. It’s a great place for having lunch or dinner, for shopping, for sitting at a cafe and watching the world go by or for walking – you can do a full circuit on top of the walls or stroll through the cobbled streets. It hosts a summer festival dedicated to the work of Giacomo Puccini, who was born in the town, while a modern music festival in July this year featured Elton John, Bob Dylan, Paolo Nutini and Snoop Dogg.
